Ridley-Smith, Ph.D.,  C. (2014).Doctoral Dissertation – “The Advantages and Disadvantages of the Desegregation Experience in Metropolitan Nashville Davidson County Public Schools (1963-1976).” From a unique set of participants (those who attended both segregated  and desegregated schools), we learn what they perceived to be the advantages and disadvantages of having attended desegregated schools in Metro Nashville Davidson County Public Schools from 1963-1976.

 

 

Themes present:  cultural intelligence, access to better resources, broadening horizons, social isolation,  newcomer/host culture relations, affirmative action for white student,  recalibrating one’s  position in the social hierarchy, lack of academic rigor, disrespect for teachers, intra-racial discrimination.
